Broncos coach criticized for decision to ‘disrespect’ Dolphins star Russell Wilson
Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard criticized the Denver Broncos for a “disrespectful” decision involving quarterback Russell Wilson on Sunday in the NFL.
The Denver Broncos coaching staff was criticized by a Miami Dolphins player after Sunday’s Week 3 game.
The Dolphins earned a huge 70-20 win over the Broncos on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. As a result, the Dolphins are 3-0 while the Broncos are 0-3 after the first three games of the season.
By defeating the Broncos, the Dolphins broke an NFL record. With a total of 726 yards accumulated, Mike McDaniel’s team became the first team in league history to amass more than 700 yards and score 70 points in a single game.
On the other side of the field, the Broncos are still winless after their third match of the season. Russell completed 23 of 38 passes for a total of 306 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception.
By comparison, Tua Tagovailoa has thrown four touchdown passes. He had 309 total passing yards, slightly better than Wilson, and no interceptions. Another difference between the two midfielders is their respective playing time on the field. Wilson participated in every offensive snap for the Broncos, while Tagovailoa was replaced by Mike White in the fourth quarter, a game long decided by the score.
The decision not to replace Wilson with a backup quarterback when the outcome of the game was clearly decided before the end of the fourth quarter apparently angered one Dolphins player. Cornerback Xavien Howard called the decision not to cut Wilson “disrespectful” by the Broncos coaching staff, including head coach Sean Payton.
“It was completely disrespectful,” Howard was quoted as saying via ProFootballNetwork. “This man has done so much for this match. They need to do better on that front. You can’t leave people like that there.
Although the game was far from a success for the Broncos and Wilson, the veteran quarterback remained busy when he was on the field. He was sacked once to go along with the seven he suffered in a Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders.
The Broncos have Jarrett Stidham as their backup quarterback, but Payton chose not to use the former fourth-round pick to give Wilson some time off. The Broncos will now be busy preparing for Week 4, where a trip to the Chicago Bears (0-3) will see both teams looking for their first wins of the season.
