Max Verstappen has dominated the current campaign, winning 13 races to Sergio Perez’s two.
Antonio Perez, father of Red Bull driver Sergio, said everything at the Milton Keynes-based team is built around Max Verstappen.
Verstappen is enjoying the current season and is on track to win his third World Championship – a feat he could achieve in the next round against Qatar.
Perez started the season with two wins in the first four races, but has since struggled to find form alongside Verstappen, who has set a record of 10 consecutive wins between Miami and Italy.
The Dutchman has consistently outpaced Perez since he joined the team in 2021, with Perez struggling to adapt to the demands of Red Bull with a very different driving style to Perez. Perez Senior confirmed that the reason was because the cars gathered around Verstappen.
“Any brand would be happy to have Perez”
“Everything is built around Max, he [Perez] has to respect that,” senior Perez told Esto Mexico.
“The car is suitable for Max, who likes the feeling of traction in the front of the car.
“Checo prefers rear grips, but so he has to drive a car specifically designed for Max.”
The two drivers have different driving styles, with Verstappen preferring a sharp car that takes sharp turns and can handle a loose rear end.
As for Perez, he needs more grip from the back of the car, but Red Bull have denied claims that the car was designed around Verstappen’s needs – with Christian Horner insisting the fastest possible car has been built creation – and only Verstappen could have handled it better. Despite poor form this year, Perez is still second in the Drivers’ Championship, which would be the best result of his career.
He is 33 points ahead of third-placed Lewis Hamilton with six rounds remaining in the campaign until the Japanese Grand Prix and is expected to stay with the team until 2024.
Additionally, Perez’s future at Red Bull remains uncertain, but his father is certain that any team would be happy to have his son because of his marketing abilities.
“Checo is second [in the standings] and that’s exactly what he was hired for at Red Bull,” he said.
“There is only room for one world champion.
“He has a huge fan base worldwide and is the only rider from Latin America. Any brand in the world would be happy with him.”
