Don Hutchison has praised Anthony Gordon and believes he is proving to be a bargain for Newcastle United after his performance against Manchester City on Wednesday.
Hutchison was speaking on ESPN after the Magpies knocked Pep Guardiola’s side out of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win at St James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon has had an exceptional start to the campaign. There is a lot of pressure on the 22-year-old after completing a £45 million deal from Everton in the January transfer window. Eddie Howe took the time to free Gordon. But his patience has certainly paid off as the youngster has scored two goals and provided two assists in the Premier League this season.
Hutchison surprised Anthony Gordon after Newcastle’s victory
Gordon had a big impact on Wednesday’s draw after being introduced at half-time. And Hutchison believes Newcastle’s signing of the attacking midfielder now looks like a coup.
“Some things changed [in the second half]. I think Eddie Howe has brought in his best players. Anthony Gordon, suddenly £40m seems like a bargain. I think Livramento plays great at right-back. Then Bruno came, he influenced Tonali and Joelinton. And then Newcastle came in,” he told ESPN. Once again, Newcastle have a game changer in their ranks, who has found another level working under Howe.
What is remarkable is how many players have improved under Howe. Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron were, understandably, dismissed by fans at different stages of their Newcastle careers.
They all excelled under Howe. And Gordon is now stepping up his efforts after a difficult start to life on Tyneside. He is currently having a big impact against the best teams in the country. Of course, he gave Liverpool a hot time in the dramatic first half of last month’s match. And now he has helped change the game against Manchester City.
It seems like the Magpies took a risk by spending too much money on Gordon when they signed him. But now there is no doubt that this risk is paying off.
