F1 legend tips two drivers to take over from Perez at Red Bull > Sport-lite era
Eddie Jordan believes Red Bull should consider promoting their reserve driver, Liam Lawson, as one of two possible drivers to partner Max Verstappen in the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Currently, Sergio Pérez is sitting next to the reigning world champion, but disappointing performances in the 2023 season have raised doubts about his future, especially with his contract expiring in end of 2024.
Red Bull has plenty of options for next season and Lawson could be a strong candidate.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has previously mentioned significant interest from F1 drivers regarding the potential vacancy.
And now former F1 team owner Jordan believes Lawson deserves a permanent seat in F1 after being overlooked by AlphaTauri.
Jordan:
Lawson could be the next Vettel.
Lawson finished 11th – and he continued to do so – in a car that really shouldn’t have been there, scored points in Singapore and he was always there,” Jordan said on the Cong podcast sense of your success. “Lawson deserves a chance in Formula 1, you can only win the championship with one driver. And in my opinion, if you replace Checo [Perez], I will change him into someone completely new, who have a really bright future…
“I think Lawson because it’s the same kind of relief team, right? Where [Sebastian] Vettel comes from and Lawson has that ability. I think he, next year or the year after, will end up at Red Bull.”
Jordan then added:
“Put Lawson in the car. Take this opportunity, because you have the chance to create another Vettel. It’s really difficult to see how Daniel [Ricciardo] will do it… Don’t lose sight of Lawson, though, I think he’s really good.
And if the Lawson move fails, Jordan has another promising young talent in his sights, someone he thinks Red Bull should keep an eye on. He revealed that he received information about Oscar Piastri’s outstanding abilities long before the Australian driver entered Formula 1 with McLaren.
“I think he is the real deal – full marks to McLaren, they’ve signed him ’til ’26 because they needed to, because he will be a very sought-after driver
If I was in Red Bull, and I was thinking of replacing Checo, he’d be the one I’d have in my mind.”
