How long will LIV Golf last? Let Ian Poulter tell you…
According to an interview with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan published in the Telegraph, Ian Poulter acknowledges that LIV Golf will continue long after 2025.
The LIV Golf League, which concludes its second season in Miami this evening, is expected to “go on and on” despite the recently signed framework agreement between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf’s financiers, PIF.
LIV Golf star Poulter, 47, spoke about a number of the latest LIV Golf topics in an interview with Telegraph’s James Corrigan.
When pressed on the future of the LIV Golf League in light of the PGA Tour’s framework agreement with PIF, Poulter said:
“I talked to his Excellency last week [at the LIV event in Jeddah]. He told me, never mind 2024, 2025 – LIV will go and on.”
Poulter, who is a co-captain at Majesticks GC on LIV Golf, added:
“He is still as passionate about this as he was at the beginning, and I spoke to him while I was there. He adores the idea, the way it’s developing, and the difference it has made and continues to make. Not just in golf, but all over the sports world, you see it.
Al-Rumayyan and R&A president Martin Slumbers played golf together earlier this month at the Dunhill Links Pro-Am on the DP World Tour.
Poulter also disclosed how one LIV Golf player had criticized the new TGL, an indoor golf league that will air on Monday nights and is run by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
One player reportedly told Poulter:
“It’s a blatant fop to Tiger and Rory to keep them onside and earn them millions of guess what, ‘guaranteed money’”.
Poulter’s Majesticks were defeated in the Quarter-Finals in the season finale in Miami.
They went down 2-1 to Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs.
Together with Lee Westwood, Poulter suffered a 4&2 defeat at the hands of Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz.
Garcia was defeated by Majesticks co-captain Henrik Stenson in the singles match, but Eugenio Chacarra defeated Sam Horsfield in the second match to secure the victory for the Fireballs.
The RangeGoats of Bubba Watson then defeated the Fireballs in the Semi-Finals.
In the Sunday Final, the season-long team champions will be decided by a single round of strokeplay between the 4Aces (the defending champions), Crushers, Torque, and RangeGoats.
