It is unclear whether the incident will delay the start of the new tournament scheduled to begin on the 9th /1 or not.
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s exciting new indoor golf tournament isn’t off to the best of starts.
The roof of the SoFi Center at TGL in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, collapsed Tuesday night after an apparent power outage. No one was injured in the incident, but the air dome appeared to be significantly damaged Wednesday morning.
The roof of TGL’s SoFi Center collapsed overnight, causing significant disruption to arena construction.
A source said no one was injured, but the start of TGL may be delayed.
It is unclear whether the damage will delay the start of the tournament scheduled to begin on January 9.
“An overnight failure of the temporary electrical system used during the construction phase caused deflation and damage to the site’s pneumatic dome,” TGL said in a statement, via Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated. “At this point, as we assess the damage, it is too early to determine the impact on our timeline. There are no injuries and no technology is affected. Further work at present continues.
” SoFi Center’s dome will host a new indoor golf simulator next year. The venue, being built on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Florida, is approximately 250,000 square feet and can accommodate 2,000 people.
The tournament will consist of six teams that will compete in rotating “trios”, singles matches and close-quarters competitions throughout the season. The venue will feature a 64-by-46-foot simulator for practice and a 97-by-50-yard playing surface where real golfers can chip and putt on real greens and bunkers.
The tournament is scheduled to begin January 9 on ESPN, and both ESPN and ESPN2 will host events throughout its first season on Tuesday nights. Five of the six teams have been sold to ownership groups and several notable names – including Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa and others – have signed to play alongside McIlroy and Woods .
