Brooks Koepka has made no secret of his fallout with LIV Golf teammate Matt Wolff in recent months, but it appears the pair are set to play together again in 2024
LIV Golf have affirmed Matt Wolff has stayed on the Crush GC program heading into 2024, in spite of his monstrous aftermath with group commander Creeks Koepka.
On Thursday, LIV declared that it had entered the free organization phase of its offseason move window. In absolute 10 spaces stay empty across the 12 groups, with three set to be taken by the top finishers at LIV Golf Advancements one month from now, and one previously filled by the Asian Visit’s Worldwide Series victor Andy Ogletree.
Koepka is one of a number of captains who has a place up for grabs, after his brother Chase was relegated from the breakaway league at the end of the 2023 campaign alongside James Piot, Sihwan Kim and Jediah Morgan.
To the surprise of many though the five-time major champion only has one spot left to fill, despite it being widely tipped that fellow Smash star Wolff was set to move on. Koepka and Wolff infamously fell out earlier this year, after the former took aim at the latter ahead of LIV London in July.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Koepka hit out at Wolff, who he labelled a ‘wasted talent’ in the days leading up to the event at Centurion. “It’s very tough to have even like a team dynamic when you’ve got one guy that won’t work,” Koepka said of Wolff in an astonishing rant.
One guy is not going to give any effort, he’s going to quit on the course, break clubs, gets down, bad body language, it’s very tough. I’ve basically given up on him—a lot of talent, but I mean the talent’s wasted.” Wolff himself was quick to respond, admitting he was ‘heartbroken’ by the comments. The feud continued at last month’s Team Championship, when Koepka brutally snubbed Wolff as part of the Smash setup. “There’s only three of us on our team,” he said. “I mean, obviously, I’m pretty tight with my brother [Chase], and I’ve been pretty close with Jay [Kokrak] for maybe the last three years
I’ve enjoyed being around him. He’s a good player, super talented. It’s been fun to be around him, and he’s played pretty solidly this year. Yeah, I can’t say anything bad about him.” For now though it seems Koepka is going to have to continue to put up with the troubles within his team, with Wolff still part of the roster.
Various players have fallen into free office from the LIV arrangement, and as things stand are without a group heading into 2024. In spite of completing in the ‘Open Zone’ (positioned somewhere in the range of 25th and 44th in 2023), Wolff has stayed separated of the Crush group due to having one year left on his agreement.
While Wolff stays connected to Crush GC for the time being, the American could well actually leave the arrangement by means of an exchange to one more group all through the exchange window. This would pass on Koepka requiring two new players to join himself and Jason Kokrak for the third mission of the breakaway association.
