CONFIRMED: RORY MCILROY DETHRONES TIGER WOODS IN PGA TOUR’S POPULARITY CONTEST
Rory McIlroy beats Tiger Woods to win the PGA Tour’s biggest prize of $15 million in the 2023 Player Impact Program.
It’s official: Rory McIlroy beats Tiger Woods to win the PGA Tour’s top prize of $15 million, the most media-watched event of 2023.
This news was announced by the PGA Tour on November 28th. This is the first time a Northern Irish player has won the Player Impact Programme.
Woods won his first PIP in 2021 and a year after that, proving he is still “in front” in men’s professional golf.
The 47-year-old received $23 million for his two first place finishes. He increased the amount to $35 million this year after he finished second behind McIlroy.
What is PIP?
PIP was introduced in 2021. It is designed to reward players who generate the most interest on the PGA Tour.
Key numbers such as Google searches, news article mentions, social media reach, and TV viewing time are taken into account to determine rankings.
Unsurprisingly, Woods and McIlroy are at the top of the list.
Woods’ draw is bigger than ever as McIlroy gains attention amid unprecedented turmoil in men’s professional golf.
PIP is also seen by many as a way to prevent a PGA Tour star from joining his rival’s LIV Golf League.
Will PIP continue?
The PGA Tour has announced that the PIP will continue for the 2023-2024 season, but the total prize money will be reduced to $50 million and divided among the top 10 players.
