DISGRACED MASTERS CHAMPION ANGEL CABRERA SET FOR PGA TOUR RETURN

Having completed a 30-month prison sentence, Cabrera will be making a controversial return to Tour golf at this week’s Trophy Hassan II in Morocco.

Angel Cabrera, a previous Masters champion, is scheduled to make a contentious comeback to professional golf this week after spending over two years in jail for accusations of domestic abuse.

Cabrera completed his sentence in a notorious prison in Argentina and was freed in August 2023 following his conviction on charges related to his ex-girlfriends Cecilia Torres Mana and Micaela Escudero.

Although he has had recent controversies, Cabrera is still scheduled to participate in the Trophy Hassan II at Royal Golf Dar es Salam in Morocco on the PGA Tour Champions this week.

The golfer, who is 54 years old, made a comeback to competitive golf in December at the PGA Tour’s Latinoamerica Development Tour in Argentina where he ended up in a tied for 10th place. After that, he also achieved a third place result at the South Open held in his home country of Argentina, a competition comprising of both current and up-and-coming Korn Ferry Tour golfers.

“Cabrera will compete in the American senior tour alongside golfers like Jim Furyk, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Colin Montgomerie.

The two-time major winner has stated his goal of competing in the Masters tournament held at Augusta National, but this aspiration may not materialize if he is unable to secure a visa for entry into the United States.”

Last year, he expressed his excitement about the opportunity to attend the Champions Dinner alongside numerous renowned golf players.

Fred Ridley, the Augusta National chairman, has indicated that if Cabrera’s travel issues are resolved, he would be invited back to the prestigious venue.

He stated that Angel is definitely one of their top champions, but he is currently unable to travel to the United States. “He does not possess a visa and I am aware that the procedure is currently being sorted out.”

We hope for the best for him in resolving his legal issues and we will be happy to have him back after that. Cabrera is currently identified as a former champion who will not be participating in the 2024 Masters.

The last time he participated in the Masters was in 2018, where he failed to qualify for the second consecutive year.

Cabrera achieved his first significant win at the 2007 US Open and later secured a second victory at the 2009 Masters.
