Spieth gave Matsuyama some words of warning following a costly error earlier in the week that saw him disqualified from the Genesis Invitational.
Jordan Spieth’s week in Los Angeles took an unexpected turn when he was disqualified from the Genesis Invitational for accidentally signing an incorrect scorecard after the second round.
On Sunday, the unfortunate incident was recalled when Spieth jokingly referenced it while congratulating Hideki Matsuyama on his win at Riviera Country Club.
During the final round, Matsuyama made a strong comeback to secure a victory with a three-shot lead, despite starting the day trailing the overnight leader, Patrick Cantlay, by six shots. The Japanese golfer finished with a 9-under par 62 on Sunday, making nine birdies and nine pars.
This score was the lowest by a tournament winner in the history of the event. Matsuyama’s win on the PGA Tour this season was his first, as he finished three shots ahead of Luke List and Will Zalatoris, securing the victory and outperforming his competitors.
With the final putt having dropped, Spieth took to X (Formerly Twitter) to congratulate Matsuyama and, in doing so, poked fun at his own error earlier in the week, saying:
“Great playing Hideki! Make sure you double check that scorecard”
Spieth was disqualified after mistakenly recording a par instead of a bogey on the fourth hole. After shooting an impressive 5-under 66 in his first round, Spieth struggled in the second round with a score of 73 prior to a mistake.
Xander Schauffele revealed that Jordan Spieth hurried to the restroom at the conclusion of his second round, leading to the error.
Spieth’s error proved to be expensive as the prize money for the Genesis event, a prestigious tournament on the PGA Tour, amounted to a staggering $20 million.
Matsuyama received a check for $4 million for winning, bringing his total career earnings on the PGA Tour to an impressive $48 million.
