Tony Finau will attempt to defend his PGA Tour title at the Mexico Open. Here is how much they’re all playing for at Vidanta Vallarta.
The PGA Tour is going to Vidanta Vallarta for the Mexico Open. Tony Finau currently holds the title as the champion of this tournament.
Last year, the 34-year-old American won the top prize of $1.4m by fending off a challenge from the current Masters champion, Jon Rahm.
The PGA Tour has suspended Rahm this season for choosing to play in LIV Golf. In 2022, Finau had an impressive performance at the Mexico Open, ending as a runner-up alongside Rahm.
The Srixon player has an impressive record of being 40 strokes under par in the last two Mexico Open tournaments. He is the clear favorite to win at 8/1 odds.
Charley Hoffman, a four-time champion on the PGA Tour, is another contender who believes he can succeed in Mexico.
Earlier this month, he was defeated by Nick Taylor in a playoff at the WM Phoenix Open. The 47-year-old golfer will participate in his 497th PGA Tour competition. Hoffman’s odds are set at 66/1.
Hoffman is expected to reach his milestone 500th start at the Valero Texas Open in April, which is his preferred regular PGA Tour event.
Other players to watch out for this week include Akshay Bhatia who finished fourth in last year’s event.
Bhatia won the 2023 Barracuda Championship and had five top-10s and a runners-up finish last season.
From a European perspective, Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard will be searching for his first PGA Tour win.
The 2022 Mexico Open has a total prize purse of $8m. The winner will walk away with a top prize of $1,458,000.
