PGA Tour employees were told no historical footage of Tiger Woods in Nike gear was to be shared on tournament social channels going forward.
Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour by competing in the Genesis Invitational after several months of absence.
If you missed the news, it was the first time in 27 years that Woods was seen on the course wearing a different brand than Nike. Woods wore his new Sun Day Red clothing while playing 24½ holes at Riviera Country Club. Additionally, he debuted a pair of new golf shoes during the round.
Woods made an interesting decision to abandon the famous TW logo that he introduced in 2000 prior to winning the Tiger Slam. Before starting the game on Thursday, Woods mentioned that he no longer wanted the logo and simply said to a reporter that he had moved on.
And a report by NLU’s Kevin Van Valkenburg published this week illustrates just how desperate Woods is to distance himself from Nike.
So much so, PGA Tour staff were reportedly told before the Genesis that going forward, they must only share imagery and video content of Woods on tournament channels in his Sun Day Red clothing.
Van Valkenburg reported:
“He is in transition. He has moved on, and nostalgia doesn’t interest him. A memo even circulated within the PGA Tour this week informing employees that no historical footage of Woods in Nike gear was to be shared on tournament social channels going forward. Every image of him from now on will have to feature him wearing Sun Day Red.”
The most recent return of Woods to the PGA Tour resulted in disappointment for the legendary golfer.
During the second round of the tournament he organizes each year, he decided to withdraw after hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole. In a golf cart, he was quickly taken away, his visible distress causing concern among his supporters who called for paramedics.
However, Woods exited the premises shortly after. Following this, his team verified that he was experiencing symptoms similar to those of the flu. The paramedics were summoned to the clubhouse because there were no IV’s available.
Additionally, Woods expressed discomfort due to dizziness. His upcoming start is expected to be at either The Classic at Palm Beaches or the prestigious Players Championship.
