Why Charlie Woods isn’t wearing dad Tiger’s new clothing range in PGA Tour qualifier
Charlie Woods is participating in the preliminary competition for the Cognizant Classic at The Palm Beaches this week, hoping to secure a place in the PGA Tour event in his hometown.
Charlie, the son of Tiger Woods, participated in a PGA Tour qualifier on Thursday, with spectators observing his unique outfit as he hit the course. Fifteen-year-old Charlie aimed to qualify for the Cognizant Classic at The Palm Beaches by participating in an event at the Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. He wore Greyson Clothiers and a Titleist instead of his father’s new clothing line, Sun Day Red.
Greyson and Titleist both sponsor many golfers and are popular among players. Charlie’s choice not to wear his father’s company’s clothing was unexpected, considering the family connection.
Nevertheless, Woods Sr has supported his son’s independence in making decisions about his attire during his budding golf career. “In an interview in 2021, Woods expressed that his son is independent and he values Charlie for being true to himself.
He stated his pride in whatever choices Charlie makes in life.” In January, Tiger terminated his contract with Nike after 27 years, marking the end of one of the most legendary
partnerships in sports history.
Charlie was not expected to sign with Nike, but it was surprising to see him choose to wear Greyson instead. Greyson is partially owned by NFL icon Larry Fitzgerald, who hinted at Charlie signing a deal with them in an Instagram post saying, “Welcome to the family, Charlie Woods.”
Charlie is demonstrating a strong commitment to his golf career by participating in the 2023 PNC Championship alongside his father, Woods.
The duo achieved a fifth-place finish after steadily advancing in the rankings, with Charlie notably hitting every fairway on the last day. His attempt to qualify seems to be ending as he scored a very high 16-over-par 86, placing him far from the top five spots needed for qualification in the tournament. Woods, who is 48 years old, announced the launch of his new brand at the beginning of this month. The golfer, who has won 15 major titles, mentioned that he has worn red in every professional tournament he has played in.
The color red has become closely associated with him. Specifically, wearing red on Sundays has become his signature look. This tradition of wearing red on Sundays originated from his mother, Kultida. As a Capricorn, she believed that her power color was red, so she wore red when she was a young golfer and ended up winning some tournaments.
To her surprise, she later attended Stanford University, which has red as its color. She and her team would wear red on the last day of each tournament they played.
Woods is anticipated to participate in his next PGA Tour event at the Players Championship in the upcoming month, having pulled out of the Genesis Invitational because of sickness. Additionally, he plans to compete in the Masters in April, marking five years since his last win at Augusta.
