MIKE WEIR REVEALS HUGE LIV GOLF LEAGUE NEWS AHEAD OF PRESIDENTS CUP
International captain Mike Weir confirms LIV Golf League players will remain out of the Presidents Cup.
Captain of the international team, Mike Weir, has stated that players from the LIV Golf League will not be able to participate in the Presidents Cup in September. However, there is a possibility that they may be eligible to compete in the event in 2026.
At 53 years old, Weir has been given the position of leading the International Presidents Cup team for the first time. He participated as a player in the event five times from 2000 to 2009.
He has also been a vice-captain on two occasions.
Due to the PGA Tour hosting the Presidents Cup, it is likely not unexpected to golf fans that LIV Golf League players have been excluded from the competition for the time being.
The same thing happened at the 2022 Presidents Cup when the USA won by five points (17.5-12.5) at Quail Hollow.
All members that have diverted to LIV Golf remain suspended by the PGA Tour.
Weir confirmed the ineligibility of LIV Golf players in the 2024 Presidents Cup via a media conference call this afternoon:
“Certainly I want the best players internationally to be playing (the Presidents Cup). Hopefully we come to a point that they are. It’s just an unfortunate situation that we’re in right now. I’ve been told they’re not eligible. They’re not going to be eligible but hopefully going forward, maybe in Chicago in 2026, they are. It is a shame. I mean, we would want the best players, but I like our team. Our team looks great right now, but yeah, I think as a captain, we want the best international players from around the world to be playing against the best U.S. guys.”
The most recent announcement signifies that players such as Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, Mito Pereira, Carlos Ortiz, Sebastian Munoz, and Abraham Ancer will not be part of Weir’s International team at the Royal Montreal Golf Club from September 26-29.
This also implies that golfers like Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Talor Gooch will not be in Jim Furyk’s United States team.
The United States is aiming to secure their tenth consecutive victory in the Presidents Cup. If the USA wins once more, it will be the 13th occasion that they have raised the trophy since the establishment of the Presidents Cup in 1994.
The Internationals emerged victorious in 1998 and also drew the match in 2003.
