Rory McIlroy cracks in £3m Arnold Palmer Invitational fight as world ranking rival takes jackpot

Rory McIlroy struggled mightily on the final day at the Arnold Palmer Invitational as he missed out on the huge jackpot with world number one Scottie Scheffler beating Wyndham Clark and Shane Lowry

Rory McIlroy had a difficult last day at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a score of 76, his highest since the Masters last year.

McIlroy was considered a top contender to win the £3 million prize in the tournament, but he struggled over the weekend, ultimately finishing four over par on the last day.

Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland was disappointed in his performance, as his iron shots did not meet his expectations during the entire weekend.

He told reporters that he had a good week hitting off the tee and is also confident with his putting.

He mentioned that he did well with putting in the past three days but struggled with his iron play.

This has been a recurring issue for him in recent weeks. He explained that he has been having difficulty with a left miss when using irons, which is frustrating because he feels good with his longer clubs like the woods but not with the irons.

So I feel like I’m having to put like two different swings on the woods and the irons at the minute, which is a struggle. But everything else feels pretty good, so if I can get the irons tightened up, I feel like I’ll be in a good spot.”

World number one Scottie Scheffler played spectacularly throughout the weekend – winning by five shots over Wyndham Clark and Shane Lowry to take the prize money – finishing with a six-under 66 and winning his seventh PGA Tour title.

Scheffler seemed to have left his previous struggles with putting behind him, as he was the best in the field on the greens during the final day – while notably using a new mallet putter.

After the victory, Scheffler commented that he had a strong performance in golf. He mentioned that him and his caddie, Teddy, had a good beginning and he focused on maintaining the momentum.

Scheffler admitted that he did not check the leaderboards frequently during the game. Instead, he stayed focused in his own zone and continued to strive for success. Winning any of Arnold Palmer’s tournaments holds a special significance.

He was a significant figure in the world of golf, and as professional players, it is a great honor to emerge victorious in his tournaments.

Regarding Scheffler’s impressive performance, McIlroy commented that while anyone can have a good run or win a tournament every now and then, it is Scottie’s consistent performances week after week that truly stand out.

McIlroy also praised Scheffler for his outstanding play on a difficult course, noting that shooting 6-under and leading the field by a wide margin is incredibly impressive.
