WATCH: Jordan Spieth-ian: Two holes after a double-bogey 7, Jordan Spieth dazzles Texas crowds with hole-in-one

Jordan Spieth stood on the tee at the 199-yard, par-3 16th hole Thursday at the Valero Texas Open. Already on his scorecard were the numbers 3, 4, 5 and 7. There wasn’t a 2, and there wasn’t a 6. The 7 came two holes earlier, when he butchered the par-5 14th hole by driving it way right and having to hit a second tee shot.

Moments later, however, there was a 1.

“Going into the 16th hole at TPC San Antonio, Spieth was four over par. However, he managed to hit a great tee shot that landed about 30 feet short of the pin and eventually rolled into the cup for a hole-in-one.

This was Spieth’s fourth hole-in-one on the PGA Tour and his first in three years. The crowd went wild for the Texas native, and Spieth celebrated by high-fiving his playing partners Hideki Matsuyama and Lucas Glover.”

“I had to adjust my 7-iron shot by aiming for a 185 yard shot and hitting a slight fade with the help of the wind. I was able to make use of the slope on the course.

I successfully hit the shot as planned and even picked up the tee. Then, as the ball landed and the spectators started to stand up, I realized it was heading towards the hole. It went in.”

“It’s actually a brand new 7-iron this week, only the 7-iron. I like hitting my 7-iron and so I’ve got it to where, when I’m testing my gaps, it like goes five yards too far in the gap. I didn’t know why. On Wednesday after the pro-am I was hitting on the back of the range, I had them just bring a brand new 7-iron for new grooves and it was up in the right spin window, so knocked four, five yards off of it. If I didn’t change 7-irons yesterday, then I wouldn’t have made it. It’s funny.”

The hole-in-one appeared to shift his momentum, despite being made later in the game.

Spieth hit his ball into a bunker on the 17th hole, a par-4, but then made a shot from 69 yards that landed within 12 feet of the hole.

He successfully made the birdie putt. Spieth finished the round with a par on the par-5 18th hole by hitting his third shot to 25 feet and taking two putts to shoot a score of one-over 73. Yes, indeed, it was a typical round for Spieth. He struggled for most of the day, starting off four over par after 15 holes, but managed to finish strong by scoring three under par on the last three holes.

He currently trails the leader by 10 shots. Akshay Bhatia had an impressive round, shooting a nine-under 63 with nine birdies.

“It feels like I am performing much better than my scores reflect, but it doesn’t show. It’s difficult to articulate,” Spieth stated.

“I have played much worse in the past and still achieved consecutive top-10 finishes compared to the recent missed cuts. It’s quite strange.

My game feels good, but I am not seeing the desired results.” There is no text provided for paraphrasing.
