Justin Thomas warned he’s made ‘very unusual’ gamble that could cost him at Masters
Justin Thomas parted ways with his coach, Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, just days before he was due to travel to Augusta National for the Masters, and the decision raised a few eyebrows
Justin Thomas has been cautioned that his decision to part ways with his coach, Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, just before the Masters tournament could have negative consequences for him in the future.
Butch Harman, a renowned swing coach, expressed surprise upon learning that Thomas and Mackay had ended their professional partnership after three successful years together. Mackay had served as Thomas’ caddy during some of the most successful periods of his career, including winning the 2022 PGA Championship and the 2021 Ryder Cup.
At the beginning of the year, Thomas faced challenges as he failed to make the cut at both the Genesis Invitational and The Players Championship. After finishing in 64th place at the Valspar Championship, the 30-year-old golfer realized it was time for a change.
On Wednesday April 3, Thomas unexpectedly revealed on social media that he had ended his professional relationship with Mackay after three years, just before his planned trip to Georgia. This announcement caused surprise among many, as there were no indications of an impending separation.
Speaking to Mirror Sport, Harmon admitted he was taken aback by the news, and explained his belief that going into a major with a brand new caddy can never be good preparation. “I was shocked at that. Bones has caddied for JT for a few years now, two major championship wins, been with Phil Mickelson for 25 years, truly one of the best caddies in the game.
“I talked to Bones last night through text, he didn’t really let on on what happened or why it happened, so we’ve got to wait until one of them decides to let us know what the reason is.
I was extremely shocked that this happened the week before the first major tournament of the year. It is very uncommon, as usually such situations would occur after the tournament.
Having a new caddy going into a major championship is unheard of, to be honest. Like many others, I was surprised to see it happen.
Thomas expressed his gratitude to Mackay in his statement, acknowledging his contributions and implying that there was no personal discord between them.
He expressed: “Although it is very hard for me to admit, Bones and I have decided to part ways.
I will always be grateful to him for being my caddie in 2021.
The achievements we have accomplished together such as winning The PGA Championship in 2022, participating in The Presidents Cup and The Ryder Cups, have been truly memorable experiences.”
