The Par 3 Contest, a tradition at the Masters since 1960, will be the focus on Wednesday at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
The competition takes place on a small golf course with only nine holes, a par of 27, and a total length of 1,090 yards.
It is a family event, as most of the players have their wives, girlfriends, sons, and daughters serving as their caddies during the game.
No golfer who has won the Par 3 Contest has ever gone on to win the Masters in the same week.
1958 saw the first competition taking place on a course created by George Cobb and Clifford Roberts, one of the club’s founders, as recollected by Sam Snead.
“I agree completely that the construction of this golf course will be an important contribution to the beauty of the place. The Par 3 would give us a pretty complete golfing layout.” — Bobby Jones, in a letter to Clifford Roberts regarding architect George W. Cobb’s plan for the Par 3 course
There have been 107 holes-in-one in the event’s history, including a record nine in 2016. There were five aces last year.
