WATCH: Wyndham Clark burns Bryson DeChambeau (and LIV Golf!) after Masters R1
Wyndham Clark could not resist a sly dig at first-round leader Bryson DeChambeau and LIV Golf.
Wyndham Clark carded a lacklustre 1-over 73 on his first-ever competitive round at The Masters and then took aim at early pacesetter Bryson DeChambeau and his peers on the LIV Golf League.
Clark, 30, had moved serenely to 3-under par and on the first page of the leaderboard following a birdie on the 9th.
However, the current US Open winner made a bogey at the 11th hole, followed by a double-bogey at the 15th when his third shot landed in the water.
Clark finished his round with a bogey on the 18th hole, resulting in a score of 73, which put him eight strokes behind the current leader, DeChambeau. DeChambeau achieved his lowest round ever at Augusta National with a score of 65.
“After answering numerous inquiries from a group of journalists regarding his performance, Clark determined that he was still a contender in the competition.”
Clark couldn’t resist criticizing LIV Golf’s 54-hole format while DeChambeau was in the lead.
Clark said:
“Yeah, we’ve got 54 holes. In LIV Golf they only play 54, so I like my chances. We’ve got a lot of golf left. As you can see, someone shot 7-under. I could do that tomorrow.”
WATCH WHAT CLARK HAD TO SAY HERE:
Four years prior, DeChambeau made headlines by claiming Augusta National was essentially a ‘par-67’, as he was able to reach all four par-5s in just two shots.
After today’s round, the American golfer admitted to reporters that he made a mistake with that specific comment in 2020. Thirteen LIV Golf players are competing in the tournament this week.
“LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman is present at the event, even though tournament officials claimed he was not given a ticket.”
Jon Rahm, the defending champion and top signing for LIV Golf, shot a 73 to equal Clark’s score.
