Rory McIlroy told he’s ‘most infuriating golfer of all-time’ after Irish Open heartbreak
World No.3 Rory McIlroy missed a golden opportunity to win the Irish Open in front of his home fans at Royal County Down.
Golf fans let Rory McIlroy have it after the Northern Irishman missed a golden opportunity to claim a fairytale win at the Amgen Irish Open.
McIlroy forged a 54-hole lead at Royal County Down but came unstuck down the stretch in the final round once again after Rasmus Hojgaard surged up the leaderboard.
Hojgaard had a strong finish to the game, especially when he made a shot from the bunker at the 17th hole.
The 23-year-old Dane finished with a birdie on the last hole to shoot a 6-under 65 and take the lead at 9-under par. McIlroy made a mistake at the 15th hole, resulting in a bogey. He then recovered with a birdie at the next hole, but made another mistake by taking three putts at the 17th.
He needed to score a rare eagle on the final hole in order to tie the score and go into a playoff round.”
Even though he managed to reach the putting green in just two strokes, he was horrified to see his TP5x ball narrowly miss the hole on the right side.
Observing the scene, Hojgaard appeared shocked and amazed by winning his fifth DP World Tour title.
McIlroy almost won again, but this will be the big story.
