Lewis Hamilton learns Saudi GP penalty fate after ‘dangerous’ move on F1 rival.
Lewis Hamilton was investigated by the stewards following Friday’s practice session at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after Alex Albon accused him of a “f***ing dangerous” maneuver on track.
Hamilton ultimately escaped any penalty for the incident. He had come under scrutiny after allegedly blocking Albon during the second practice session (FP2). The British-Thai driver was forced to take evasive action when he encountered Hamilton’s slow-moving Ferrari while on a flying lap. Frustrated, Albon called the move “f***ing dangerous” over the team radio, prompting an official review of the incident once the session ended.
But the stewards have now decided that no further action will be taken against the Brit despite his blocking of the Williams on track. They explained: “We determined that Car 44 [Hamilton] unnecessarily impeded Car 23 [Albon] during Practice 2 at Turn 17.
However, as agreed with the teams, unless the impeding during free practice was such that it could be regarded as dangerous, there will be no penalty for such impeding.
“During the hearing, the driver of Car 23 felt that he had the car under control at all times and while he was impeded, he did not consider the situation to be dangerous.
He had seen Car 44 in front of him during the corner before. However, he did not expect Car 44 to be in the position on track that he was in and that shocked the driver of Car 23 as he approached Turn 17 and had to take evasive action.
While his immediate reaction when the incident occurred was to say that it was dangerous, having looked at it subsequently, he agreed that it was not. We accordingly took no further action.”
Albon was not the only driver who Hamilton got on the wrong side of over the course of Friday’s running at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. The Brit had a run-in with Carlos Sainz in the other Williams car during FP1, which saw the Spaniard also complain of “dangerous” actions.
As Sainz completed a flying lap in one of the track’s high-speed zones he discovered Hamilton ahead moving slowly which made him visibly anxious.
Sainz shocked his audience by swearing through his radio transmission while informing his crew about the dangerous situation. “F**k. The Ferrari. The situation was extremely hazardous according to him. “He cannot let me by there. The Ferrari driver must be notified to avoid interfering with race competitors in this area. It’s so dangerous.”
Commentator Karun Chandhok acknowledged from the Sky Sports broadcast why Sainz was showing so much anger during the race. The Ferrari driver dawdled in that part of the race track at 160mph without warning the other drivers according to him. The Ferrari attempted to move aside yet Sainz suggested drivers need to leave the race course if they aim to provide safeness in that zone.
