Rory McIlroy takes sly dig at major venue ahead of Scottish Open

Alright, it’s official—Rory McIlroy is back. Or rather, his voice is.

You might recall that earlier this year, Rory wasn’t doing much media, and when he did, he didn’t seem all that upbeat. Thankfully, that phase appears to be over, because one of golf’s best press conference performers is back in top form.

During Wednesday’s media day ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open, McIlroy delivered his usual mix of sharp and thoughtful responses. But one light-hearted jab stood out—his unexpected swipe at the PGA of America’s new HQ, PGA Frisco, which is set to host the PGA Championship in 2027 and 2034.

While discussing how certain major wins mean more because of the iconic venues, McIlroy couldn’t resist poking fun.

“I’d love to win an Open at Portrush, for sure,” he said. “I’d love to win an Open at St. Andrews. A U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. A PGA at PGA Frisco—not. (Laughter).”

Ouch—Rory delivering a playful uppercut.

He went on: “But really, there are venues in golf that just carry more weight. Maybe Frisco will earn that status someday, who knows.”

And he’s not wrong. As a brand-new location, PGA Frisco doesn’t yet have the legacy of places like Pebble or St. Andrews—though it has hosted the KPMG Women’s PGA and the 2023 Senior PGA Championship.

Still, his joke hit the mark—and the crowd.

Bottom line: Rory’s back to being Rory. And we’re loving every second of it.
