U.S. Ryder Cup team to get paid (!) for first time in history but Europe will not
Report: Players on the United States Ryder Cup team will get paid for the first time in Ryder Cup history, but Europe will not follow suit according to The Telegraph.
Players on the 2025 United States Ryder Cup team are expected be paid for the first time in the biennial event’s 97-year history at Bethpage Black in New York next September, according to The Telegraph’s James Corrigan.
The bombshell update coming out of the U.S. Ryder Cup team will mean players on Keegan Bradley’s side will reportedly collect in the region of $400,000 each.
Corrigan reports “there are no plans for European players to be paid to appear.”
Nothing has yet been made official by the PGA of America but insiders have told The Telegraph that pay cheques for U.S. players are expected to be ratified at board level
As has been tradition for nearly 100 years in one of sport’s greatest team events, Ryder Cup players have never been paid.
It’s always been about pride.
There has been heated debate on how to host the 2023 Ryder Cup at the Marco Simone golf in Rome when Patrick Cantlay appeared for the event without a cap on his head.
Cantlay was accused by the Sky Sports reporter of Jamie Weir that he had refused to wear the Team USA cap he was given due to the fact that he was get ting wa ration money he was getting as a result of re-presenting his nation in Rome.
Weir also said that Cantlay refused an invitation to the Ryder Cup gala dinner where the wives and girlfriends of Team Europe and Team USA were present.
These were succeeded by rumours of a divided dressing room due to activities from Cantlay during the week but some members dismissed the issue.
From the comments that Weir made about Cantlay, the European crowd fueled the rivalry for the entire week, and taunted the Californian every chance they got by waving their caps like crazy around Marco Simone.
Things further escalated when Cantlay buried a long putt to win his Saturday fourballs match alongside Wyndham Clark and against Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava, who was the former caddie of Tiger Woods, took off his hat and swung it round in the air before turning his attention to McIlroy who had a putt to pull level.
They then escalated to the car park when McIlroy was initially angered with whatever LaCava had done on the greens in front of him while he was attempting to address his ball for the putt.
McIlroy had the final laugh though as he beat Sam Burns in the Sunday Singles match in the process of Europe reclaiming the Ryder Cup.
He also top scored for the week while scoring four points from a possible makor test five.
What actually happened at the 2023 Ryder Cup was that although players were arguably being paid more for their efforts, each participant did at least get $200, 000 that they could give to charity.
Should 2025 American Ryder Cup team objectify her in their tweets? One European player has the answers,” said The Telegraph.
But the players on Luke Donald’s 2025 team will not be interested in emulating him as they said ‘it is not what the Ryder Cup is for’.
The player added: As we can all agree let’s face it, many of the American players have been hoping to make this move for years if not for decades.
‘If it does go ahead, then it will be interesting to see how the fans react at Bethpage, although they’ll probably announce it as just an extension of what already happens.’
: The Singles Matches for the 2025 Ryder Cup are scheduled at Bethpage Black in New York on the 26- 28 September.
Standing tickets for each day from Friday to Saturday will be going for not less than $750.
With regard to that, fans have not taken it very well.
