Alex Fitzpatrick reacts after painful Truist Championship collapse at Quail Hollow.

Alex Fitzpatrick was left heartbroken after narrowly missing out on a breakthrough victory at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club, with the Englishman admitting the defeat “stings” after coming so close to the biggest win of his career.

Fitzpatrick entered the final stretch of the tournament in contention and looked poised to complete a dream finish, but Kristoffer Reitan produced a composed closing performance to edge ahead and secure the title. The near miss was especially painful for Fitzpatrick given how consistently he played throughout the week against one of the strongest fields on tour.

Speaking after the round, Fitzpatrick acknowledged that it was difficult to process letting such a huge opportunity slip away. He admitted there were moments during the closing holes where he felt fully in control of the tournament before momentum suddenly shifted. Despite the disappointment, he also praised Reitan’s composure under pressure and said the Norwegian deserved credit for stepping up when it mattered most.

For Fitzpatrick, the result still represents another major step forward in his development. The younger brother of Matt Fitzpatrick has continued to climb steadily through the professional ranks, and his performance at Quail Hollow showed he can compete against elite PGA Tour talent on one of golf’s toughest stages.

The final round tested every part of Fitzpatrick’s game. Quail Hollow’s demanding closing stretch, often referred to as “The Green Mile,” once again proved decisive as players battled difficult approach shots, punishing rough, and immense pressure late on Sunday. Fitzpatrick handled much of the challenge impressively but ultimately came up just short in a finish that will likely motivate him moving forward.

Although the collapse was difficult to accept immediately after the round, Fitzpatrick remained optimistic about what the week could mean for his future. He said contending in a signature event against world-class competition gives him confidence that his first major PGA Tour breakthrough may not be far away.

While the defeat will linger for some time, Fitzpatrick’s performance at the Truist Championship may ultimately be remembered as the moment he announced himself as a serious contender on the biggest stages in professional golf.
