Matt Fitzpatrick just linked his mother with Tiger Woods after winning the Dunhill Links team event.
Matt Fitzpatrick has compared his mother’s achievements on Team Dunhill Links’ road to glory to Tiger Woods’s winning the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.
Fitzpatrick spoke to the media after winning his ninth DP World Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews as well as the team award alongside his mother, Susan.
The European Ryder Cup star and former US Open champion won by three strokes at 19 under in the individual major on Monday, while he also ran away with the team award alongside his mother at number under 35.
Fitzpatrick compared his mother’s performance over three rounds at Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and St Andrews to that of 15-time major champion Woods, as she played without cartilage in her knees. Woods won the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines while battling a double stress fracture and ACL problems.
After lifting both trophies on the famous Swilcan Bridge on the 18th at St Andrews, Fitzpatrick praised his mother for playing great golf with one knee tied.
Fitzpatrick said:
“Even with all my wins, except for one major, you will forget them in the future. But you will always remember the win you won with your mother, so nothing is great more than that.”
The British added:
“I only know one other person who won a major with one leg and that was Tiger Woods. The similarity is uncanny. “My mom has no cartilage in her knees, so she was amazing. I know she was in a lot of pain, so the win was even more impressive.”
