Bubba Watson is one of the 12 LIV Golf captains but has admitted that he would be happy to start aside as a playing member if his golf game is not up to scratch
Bubba Watson acknowledged that if his RangeGoats teammates weren’t satisfied with his performance on the breakaway setup, he might get “kicked out” of the LIV Golf setup.
The two-time Masters champion joined LIV last summer as one of the marquee players and was given the honor of leading the RangeGoats in 2023. Watson’s team, which is currently fourth in the standings heading into this weekend’s Team Championship, has had a successful year overall.
Talor Gooch, who was named LIV’s 2023 individual champion last week following a second-place finish at LIV Jeddah, has played a significant role in their success.
Watson, on the other hand, has struggled with his form all season, placing 36th out of 48 in the regular season. It is undeniable that the American star has been among the best players in the sport for the past 20 years, and he has two green jackets to prove it.
Despite his reputation, Watson is well aware of his current performance and feels that if he can’t deliver for his RangeGoats teammate, he will withdraw from the sport. In August, he said: “I told my team they can kick me out and we’ll replace me with another good golfer if they don’t think I’m good enough to play.
I’m going to continue to play until they expel me. I love to assist.
With his four-man team sitting just outside the top three heading into the season finale, Watson has a chance to be a successful captain in Miami this week. He continued, obviously a fan of the team dynamic: “Being on a team, it helps me and helps them. I find it enjoyable.
“I enjoy spending time in practice rounds and playing golf with them. However, if they tell me that I am not good enough, I will leave the team and let another golfer take my place. But at the moment, I’m working to get the Goats back on the podium.
