Bryson DeChambeau leads Crushers GC to victory in the LIV Golf Team Championship at Trump National Doral
Bryson DeChambeau made eight birdies en route to a 5-under 67, leading his Crushers GC to the Championship title LIV golf team championship at Trump National Doral on Sunday in Miami.
DeChambeau’s top-scoring teammate was India’s Anirban Lahiri, who shot the day’s best with a 7-under 65 that included an eagle, five birdies and no bogeys.
Charles Howell III (even 72) and England’s Paul Casey (one over 73) completed the Crushers’ final score of 11-under 277.
That was two better than RangeGoats GC, who finished second. at nine-under 279 behind captain Bubba Watson at 5-under 67.
“We wanted to win for a long time,” DeChambeau said on the telecast. ‘Last year really left us a sour taste in our mouth and I can’t be happier with this team of mine. … They worked their butts off.’
The top four seeds — 4Aces GC, Crushers GC, Torque GC and RangeGoats GC — won in Saturday’s match-play semifinals to advance to the final round. Every player’s score counted in the final round as the four squads faced off in stroke play.
Torque, captained by Joaquin Niemann of Chile, finished third at 6-under 282. Niemann shot a stellar 6-under 66, but three of his teammates had equal scoring averages.
Defending champions 4Aces fell to a team-par score of 288 to finish fourth. Captain Dustin Johnson made five bogeys and just two birdies for his team’s top score, a 3-over 75. Peter Uihlein led the 4A team with a 3-under 69.
Lahiri had an early birdie streak -birdie-eagle at Nos. 4-6 to start your turn.
“I’m not stressed at all,” Lahiri said. “I’m really excited. I’ve had a few Sundays (this season) where I’ve let myself down, but today I’m not going to let them down.
Watson finished his first season with LIV by avoiding bogey with three birdies and an eagle during his round.
“The RangeGoats came out of nowhere,” Watson said of his team. “We played very well. We need to improve a little bit, but man, (to) finish second on the year is a great place to be.
The team championship concluded the second season of the Saudi Arabia-sponsored LIV golf tournament. The future of LIV through 2024 remains uncertain due to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund’s framework agreement with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
