Lando Norris suffered a serious accident on the fourth lap of the Las Vegas Grand Prix after returning to the grid after a terrible qualifying session prepared by McLaren I got caught up in it.
McLaren star Lando Norris was taken to hospital after an accident at Sunday’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The British driver started in 15th place after a terrible qualifying session for McLaren, while teammate Oscar Piastri remained in 18th place. Norris managed to climb up to 13th place by the fourth race at the Sin City circuit.
However, in turn 12 Norris lost the rear of his car, hit the guardrail and slid into the run-off zone. While team boss Zak Brown confirmed that Norris was OK, he was taken to the track’s medical centre by the medical car.
After being looked over by the medial team, he was then sent to local hospital for further checks. That news was confirmed by McLaren as the race entered its final stages, with Piastri running in 11th place.
“Following Lando’s incident earlier, he was transferred to the circuit Medical Centre and has now been taken to University Medical Center for further precautionary investigations,” the team said in a statement.
The incident left Norris’ car buried under the barriers, with a safety car quickly being deployed. And former F1 star Jolyon Palmer believes Norris was lucky to avoid further injury after the crash.
“When Norris, a very fast left-hander, hit the top wall at Turn 11, it was like a fireball. That caused problems for the drivers,” Palmer told Radio Five Live.
After the safety car phase, world champion Max Verstappen was penalized for a first-lap maneuver against Charles Leclerc. He achieved this penalty on his first pit stop, with Leclerc taking the lead.
He then had a brief battle with Sergio Perez before Verstappen caught up to him and quickly passed them both. In a dramatic final lap, Leclerc pulled off a brilliant last-minute maneuver to snatch second place from the Mexican and then second place.
Elsewhere, Norris’ teammate Piastri took the final points and an extra point for the fastest lap of the race. Esteban Ocon finished fourth, with Lance Stroll fifth.
Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz fought back from a 10-place grid penalty to cross the finish line in 6th place. The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Geroge Russell finished seventh and eighth, with Fernando Alonso and Piastri taking the points.
