F1 fans left ‘heartbroken’ after hearing what Lewis Hamilton said in his interview following Spanish Grand Prix
On Sunday, a highly-dramatic Spanish Grand Prix saw McLaren star Oscar Piastri extend his lead in the championship standings as he crossed the line first ahead of teammate Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Unfortunately for Ferrari, seven-time world champion Hamilton didn’t have as good a race as his teammate, as he finished the race in sixth, behind former Mercedes teammate George Russell and Kick Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg.
Immediately after the race, Hamilton spoke with the media about what led to his disappointing performance in Barcelona, and his brutally honest assessment has left fans on social media totally heartbroken.
When asked if he knew what had caused him to finish the race five seconds behind his teammate, a clearly disappointed Hamilton blamed himself for the result.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Not particularly, it’s just not a great day. Just not a great day. Strategy was good, team did a great job. That’s it.”
When the reporter admitted that she hated seeing Hamilton in such an upset mood, he hit back, saying: “What do you want to say? I just had a really bad day and I’ve got nothing to say.
It was a difficult day, theres nothing else to add to it, it was terrible. There’s no point explaining it, it’s not your fault, I just don’t know what else to say.”
The journalist, understanding Hamilton’s emotions, confessed that she hoped Ferrari could help him resolve his issues this season. Hamilton, however, responded, “I’m sure they won’t. It’s probably just me.”
Hamilton’s candid and emotional response quickly went viral on social media, with many fans expressing their disappointment at seeing such a legendary figure struggle.
One fan commented on X: “Thanks for sharing this. While I know the criticism about his results is valid, these moments make me realize that our champion might be harder on himself than we are from the sidelines. Sorry if we were too tough on you. We’ll support you all the way, LH.”
Another fan expressed concern: “That guy looks defeated. He seems broken. This might be too much for him.”
And another wrote: “This is heartbreaking to watch. I just want to see prime Hamilton again.”
