Bryson DeChambeau shares what he noticed about Phil Mickelson immediately before he holed his incredible flop shot

Bryson DeChambeau had a front-row seat to an unbelievable flop shot by Phil Mickelson during the final round of LIV Virginia on Sunday.

The two were paired in the third-to-last group on the tournament’s final day.

Although neither ended up winning the individual title, the moment on the 17th hole will be etched in their memories for a long time.

Facing his second-to-last hole, Mickelson pulled off an astonishing flop shot that stunned everyone watching.

His ball had come to rest on the uphill slope beside the left greenside bunker, a position that looked nearly unplayable.

But of course, this is Phil Mickelson—we should have expected something special.

The six-time major winner pulled off the improbable and holed the shot, clearly leaving a strong impression on DeChambeau.

Bryson DeChambeau comments on Phil Mickelson’s flop shot.

DeChambeau is actually renowned for pulling off miraculous shots himself.

But even he cannot compare to Mickelson.

The 54-year-old is quite simply the best there ever has been at pulling off impossible shots around the greens.

And the flop shot that he holed at LIV Virginia may well be the very best of his career.

DeChambeau told reporters after the final round finished how he noticed Mickelson do something very specific just before he played the incredible shot.

He said, “Yeah, so Phil hit a drive up the right-hand side, blocked by a tree, tried to chip it around it, came out straight out of the rough, and it landed up on that upslope. When I saw it landing, I’m like, my gosh. He’s such a grinder. He works so hard, and I just felt — I actually felt a little bad for him at that point in time because he was playing pretty well and just couldn’t get anything going towards that back half of the round.

“Man, that was some classic Phil Mickelson magic right there. It felt like vintage Phil. He got up on that side slope, just studying the shot—you could tell he was calculating everything. Then he hit it, and I had the perfect view. The ball came off like it was rolling down a rooftop, landed just right, and I thought, ‘No way, he’s going to sink this.’ And sure enough, it dropped in. Honestly, that might be one of the best shots I’ve ever witnessed.”
