Similar to some Australians, Oscar Piastri also experiences a cultural gap in Europe and the UK. Since he has to spend most of the year there for his F1 obligations, the McLaren driver has found himself in disagreements because of his Australian slang.
Some of these disputes have been with his teammate, Lando Norris. Nevertheless, the most recent one was with his girlfriend, Lily Zneimer. Piastri finds it challenging in the UK due to the significant differences between British English and Australian English.
Piastri first gave context on his debate with Norris, beside Zneimer in a video posted by BuzzFeed UK. The couple were discussing the contrast and who among the Brits and Aussies speaks better English, given that Zneimer is British.
Piastri stated, “So this is an absolute classic to start with thongs. I’ve had this debate with Lando as well where we had quite a heated discussion.” To this, Zneimer agreed to what Norris had to say, “In the UK we would call that a flip-flop.”
Naturally, Piastri knew how this slang contrast did not help his first impression in the UK. Zneimer then advised Piastri that he needed to watch what he said. The couple had several such debates across the video since there are vast differences between British and Aussie dialects of English.
While Zneimer agrees with Norris, the latter once did suggest Piastri to break up with her. The reason wasn’t anything serious. It was just that Norris got to know that Zneimer was a “pescatarian“.
Does Lando Norris envy Oscar Piastri and Lily Zneimer’s relationship?
In 2022, Lando Norris ended his relationship with Luisinha Oliveira. As a result, he has been single ever since. It is possible that Norris may feel jealous of Oscar Piastri dating Lily Zneimer and may jokingly suggest for his McLaren teammate to also be single. However, Norris’s suggestion for Piastri to break up was meant as harmless banter.
Piastri surprised Norris when he mentioned that his girlfriend is a pescatarian, meaning she only eats fish and seafood, not meat. Norris jokingly advised Piastri to end the relationship, eliciting a humorous and mischievous response from the Australian driver.
“Despite this, Norris is aware of Piastri’s strong connection with Zneimer, so he recommended the Australian driver to be more active in public appearances with his girlfriend. He advised Piastri to consider appearing on Love Island, a reality TV show centered around couples looking for love.”
