Anthony Kim gives realistic assessment as he takes action after rocky LIV Golf start

Anthony Kim made a shock to return to professional golf earlier this month after signing with LIV Golf, and now the 38-year-old is turning his attention to the Asian Tour

Despite putting together his best round of golf since his comeback, Anthony Kim is staying grounded at LIV Hong Kong on Sunday.

Kim displayed glimpses of his past skills during the last round at Hong Kong Golf Club, recording seven birdies en route to a commendable five-under-par 65. This showing was crucial for the American golfer, who has struggled with his form since returning to LIV Golf following a 12-year hiatus.

On debut in Jeddah, Kim finished the week rock-bottom of the leaderboard at 16-over-par, and similar followed in rounds one and two in Hong Kong, with his lengthy spell away from the sport clearly taking his toll.

The rust was cast aside in Sunday’s final round, but even after looking back to his best, Kim is taking his progress one step at a time.

“It’s just one round of golf,” he said after his 65. “But I played the right way. I didn’t do anything extraordinary. I just played like I know how to play. The scores were what they are…

“I just kept doing what I’ve been working on the last two months. Obviously being away from the game so long, it’s been tough to practice and get all the things that I need to get prepared for the tournament, but I’m working on the right things at this moment.”

After getting two starts under his belt on the Saudi-backed circuit, Kim is now turning his attention elsewhere after entering this week’s International Series event in Macau over on the Asian Tour. The 38-year-old has not featured on the Asian circuit since 2011, and will play in his first world ranking-sanctioned event in 12 years.

Excited about the upcoming trip to Macau, the retired PGA Tour player expressed his anticipation, saying, “I enjoyed my time competing on the Asian Tour previously.

These recent weeks have been a fulfilling experience that I have been waiting for a long time. I am eager to focus on improving my game and returning to competitive play.”

Kim has secured a spot on the LIV setup for the remainder of the 2024 campaign, filling the vacant wildcard position on the roster due to the league expanding to include 54 players.

Although he may require some time to catch up with his competitors, Kim is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the team.

“In Hong Kong on Sunday, he expressed his gratitude for the wonderful LIV Golf experience and time spent with his family, saying, “I’m truly thankful.” He also shared his pride and gratefulness for the opportunity, reflecting on his journey over the past decade.

With each step he takes, he feels blessed, and regardless of his score, he feels like a winner.”

“I never expected to say those words, but I am endeavoring to approach this game with a sense of thankfulness and to live my life in the same manner.”
