Watch : Rory McIlroy faces fine after angrily smashing tee box marker at US Open

Rory McIlroy let his frustration show during the second round of the US Open at Oakmont, angrily striking a tee box marker on the 17th hole.

The 36-year-old golfer narrowly made the cut after shooting a 2-over-par 72 on Friday, keeping his hopes alive for a second US Open title and another major win this season.

As the round wore on, McIlroy’s frustration became increasingly apparent. After sending an errant shot on the par-5 12th, he lashed out by tomahawking his club in anger.

Five holes later, his temper flared again when he pushed his tee shot to the right, landing in a greenside bunker on the short par-4 17th. In a moment of visible rage, McIlroy turned and smashed the tee marker as his ball disappeared into the darkening Pennsylvania sky.

McIlroy will now likely face a fine with the USGA following his unruly actions.

The Northern Irishman still went on to make a par down the 17th.

He then made a clutch birdie down the par-4 18th in order to guarantee his place for the weekend.

McIlroy carded a 72 to fall to 6-over par.

He now trails Sam Burns by nine shots heading into the third round.

McIlroy will be looking for a fast start when he returns to the course early on Saturday.

McIlroy once again shunned all media interviews after the second round for the second straight day.

He did exactly the same all four tournament days at last month’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Scottie Scheffler was also seen getting a little hot under the collar on day two at the US Open.

Scheffler looked extremely unhappy about the state of his golf swing while on the range with his coach and caddie following a second-round 71.

The World No.1 finds himself two shots better off than Mcilroy at 4-over par heading into the third round.
