US Open prize money 2025: How much JJ Spaun, others won.

American golfer JJ Spaun sank a dramatic long birdie putt on the 72nd hole to secure his maiden major victory at the 2025 US Open.

Spaun battled back from a rough opening, endured a 96-minute weather delay, and fought through tough playing conditions, as well as a strong challenge from Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, to win by two strokes.

MacIntyre had started the final round seven shots behind 54-hole leader Sam Burns but carded the lowest score of the day to set a clubhouse lead at 1-over.

Spaun took command with a birdie on the short par-4 17th, then thrilled the spectators with a clutch final putt that sparked wild celebrations.

The 34-year-old, who lost to Rory McIlroy in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass in March, was reduced to tears as he was hugged by his caddie and wife Melody.

Victory carries a number of perks for Spaun.

He gets to keep hold of the trophy for one year, is the recipient of the Jack Nicklaus medal, is exempt into the next 10 US Opens and has secured starts in The Masters until 2030.

Spaun also won his fair share of prize money.

The United States Golf Association confirmed earlier in the week the prize purse for the 2025 US Open would remain unchanged.

That means Spaun walked away with $4.3m from the $21.5m purse.

The announcement by the USGA means the tournament still has the largest prize purse of all the men’s majors.

McIlroy scooped $4.2m from the $21m purse at The Masters whilst the aforementioned Scheffler picked up a cheque for $3.42m from the PGA Championship’s $19m purse.

Last July’s Open Championship – won by Xander Schauffele – had a total purse of $17m.

The R&A have not announced details of the purse for the 2025 edition of the men’s major but it is unlikely to increase significantly, if at all.
