Andrew Johnston reduced to tears after best result in four years on DP World Tour.

Andrew Johnston gets emotional after recording his best finish since August 2020 on the DP World Tour.

Andrew Johnston became emotional during his interview after achieving his best performance in four years on the DP World Tour at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

Johnston, aged 35, recorded scores of 65, 67, 72, and 66 to secure a third-place finish at 10-under par, missing out on a playoff by just one shot.

Alfredo Garcia-Heredia and eventual champion Matt Wallace competed in the playoff.

The English golfer, known as ‘Beef’, secured his first and only DP World Tour victory so far at the 2016 Open de Espaรฑa held at Valderrama.

Before last week, his highest achievement was finishing in third place at the Celtic Classic in August 2020 during the lockdown caused by COVID-19.

Johnston has openly admitted to struggling with his mental health over recent years and earlier this season HarperCollins published Johnston’s biography titled ‘Golf Is Hard’.

Fresh off two top-25 finishes on the DP World Tour in his last three tournaments, Johnston continued his resurgence to record his best finish in more than four years at the Omega European Masters on Sunday.

Although disappointed not to land a second career title on the former European Tour circuit, Johnston’s impressive solo third in Crans Montana vaulted him 69 spots up the DP World Tour Rankings to 85th on the list.

Johnston, who is playing on a medical extension this season, needs to finish inside the top 115 in the DP World Tour Rankings to earn his card for 2025.

With a number of big tournaments left on the schedule, Johnston will now be looking to keep his foot on the gas and lock up his card for next season.

An emotional Johnston told Sky Sports Golf’s Josh Antmann:

“Yeah a lot of relief, it’s been a tough couple of years.

“To put in a good performance for four days, yeah it’s been good.

“I don’t ever like to go in with that expectation, you have to believe you can have a good week, but its four rounds of golf and anything can happen. It’s just a case of trying to put yourself into a good position going into Sunday. The way we battled on Saturday in the wind and hung around to give ourselves a chance today is all you can do. We tried to be aggressive today to try and catch Matt. Alfredo has, I haven’t, but I’m delighted with the week.”

On the help of his family and team, Beef said:
It’s great, we’re a massive team. It’s not just me, it’s everyone else, it’s so nice to have everyone.”

Why is Andrew Johnston known as ‘Beef’?

Ever since he was a young golfer, Andrew Johnston has been called ‘Beef’ because one of his friends thought his afro hairstyle resembled a big piece of meat.

Matt Wallace, who is 34 years old, won the European Masters tournament to earn his fifth victory on the DP World Tour and his first win in six years.

Wallace showed just as much emotion as Johnston did when he was interviewed by Sky’s Antmann on the 18th green.    Wallace’s win puts him in first place in the early European Ryder Cup team rankings.    The top six players will automatically qualify to be on Luke Donald’s team in 2025 .
