Justin Thomas and Jason Day in total agreement with opinion on $20M PGA Tour event.

Justin Thomas and Jason Day are among the players in the hunt for victory at the Travelers Championship, and they have both spelled out their feelings on TPC River Highlands.

Scheduled a week after a grueling U.S. Open at Oakmont, the Travelers Championship risks becoming something of an afterthought, but Justin Thomas and Jason Day have made clear it is among their favorite events on the PGA Tour.

The Travelers is the final $20 million signature event of the PGA Tour season before attention turns to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Hosted at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, the tournament is a comparative birdie-fest following the brutal examination of a U.S. Open.

Rory McIlroy made clear ahead of the tournament that returning to a venue where going low is eminently possible is a welcome “tonic” after Oakmont, where only the champion J.J. Spaun finished under par for the week

TPC River Highlands may not be the most inspiring of venues for fans after events at the likes of Muirfield Village and Oakmont in recent weeks, but Thomas, who is tied for the 36-hole lead at nine-under-par, made it known that Cromwell is one of his favorite stops on tour.

Playing the week after the U.S. Open is normally not ideal for the game’s leading players, but the Travelers’ signature event status – which carries a $20 million purse and a $3.6 million top prize – has lured a strong field in recent years.

Thomas, who missed the cut at Oakmont, is pleased to see the Travelers welcome several of the world’s elite players.

“It’s a great tournament. I’m glad that everybody is kind of experiencing it and playing because I think it’s a great tournament. It’s deserved a lot of accolades and a lot of respect from players, fans, and everybody,” the two-time major champion said.

Players are now showing up to compete, and I think they’re starting to realize how enjoyable this course is—especially right after the U.S. Open, which can be a grind. This event brings a sense of relief, even though it still demands a high level of play. It’s just a completely different kind of challenge.

Former world No. 1 Jason Day remains in contention going into the weekend, sitting at eight under par and just one shot behind co-leaders Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler.

After carding back-to-back rounds of 66, the Australian took time to commend the team behind the Travelers Championship. Considering the tough conditions at Oakmont the week before and the injuries he’s dealt with this season, many wouldn’t have blamed him for skipping the event—but he never considered missing it.

“I love this tournament and didn’t want to sit it out,” he said. “Travelers does an outstanding job, and the people here in Cromwell—or in Connecticut in general—really appreciate having the event.”

“It works both ways. I think sometimes both players and fans don’t realize how lucky we are to have this event. Travelers consistently puts together a fantastic tournament. The course and the facilities are top-tier.”

“Usually, I’d rest the week after a U.S. Open, so it was tough to skip this one. Plus, I’ve already missed two Signature Events due to injuries, so I’m playing a bit of catch-up.”
