WATCH: Rory Mcllroy makes birdie as head flies off his iron in R1 at BMW PGA.
One of the spookiest things that has ever happened to Rory McIlroy when playing his 8-iron shot on the par 5 12th in the first round of BMW PGA at Wentworth was that the head of the club to flew off down the fairway.
McIlroy, 35-years-old, was left in a state of shock, together with his caddie Harry Diamond as the head of his 8-iron from 178 yards out flew high down the fairway while the ball grounded and closed into the flag.
Even for this wild escapade of him, McIlroy produced an incredibly marvelous shot which brought the ball to spin left and down to seven feet from the pin.
McIlroy would unfortunately miss the putt on the high side but it led to a tap-in birdie that moved the Ulsterman into a share of the lead on 5-under par at the time.
He would then drill home a 30-footer for birdie on the 13th to move into the outright lead on 6-under par.
After making birdie on 12, McIlroy handed his 8-iron over to a TaylorMade rep who went back to replace it.

The four time major winner so far this year looks like obsessed having lost the Irish Open at the Royal County Down course in Northern Ireland on Sunday.
McIlroy on his part has been a former winner of the BMW PGA championship having won at Wentworth 2014.
The BMW PGA championship is quite rightly considered by many as the premier event in the DP World Tour season.
What is happening to him at the moment as he races through the things in the DP World Tour Rankings is uncomparable as he seeks to emulate what the late great Spanish crusader, Seve Ballesteros did by walking away with six Harry Vardon trophies.
