Cameron Smith is refusing to let recent struggles define his future ahead of the upcoming PGA Championship, insisting he still has the “fire in the belly” needed to compete for golf’s biggest prizes again.
The former Open champion arrives at another major season surrounded by questions after an inconsistent stretch of form that has seen him drift away from the dominance he once displayed on the world stage. Since his stunning victory at St Andrews in 2022, Smith has struggled to consistently replicate the sharp short game and fearless putting that made him one of the most dangerous players in golf. His performances on LIV Golf have produced flashes of brilliance, but not enough to silence growing doubts about whether he can seriously contend in majors again.
Despite the slump, Smith remains confident his best golf is still somewhere ahead of him. The Australian admitted results have not been where he wants them to be, but he believes the hunger to compete at the highest level has never disappeared. According to Smith, the desire to battle against the world’s elite on major Sundays is still driving him every day, even as criticism around his form continues to grow.
That belief may not be completely misplaced. Smith’s game has always been uniquely suited to major championship golf, particularly on demanding courses where creativity and touch around the greens become vital. Few players in the modern era can match his imagination with the putter when confidence is flowing. Even during difficult stretches, players with elite short games often remain dangerous because momentum can return quickly with a single strong week.
Still, the challenge facing Smith is undeniable. Major championship golf has become increasingly stacked with elite talent, and younger stars continue to raise the standard every season. Players such as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Bryson DeChambeau are producing consistently high-level performances, leaving very little margin for error. Smith’s recent inconsistency off the tee and with approach play has made it difficult for him to keep pace over four rounds at the majors.
The biggest question now is whether Smith can rediscover the sharpness that once made him one of the sport’s most feared closers. At 31, he is far from finished, and history shows many golfers peak later in their careers. His experience, calm temperament, and proven ability under pressure still make him a threat whenever conditions become difficult.
As for whether Cam has more majors in him, it would be unwise to count him out. Players with his level of talent and major-winning pedigree rarely lose that ability completely. However, he likely needs a significant improvement in consistency to genuinely return to the top tier of contenders. If the motivation he speaks about truly remains as strong as ever, Smith could still have another major moment left in him — but the window is becoming more competitive with every passing season.
