In the span of just 72 hours, eight players officially disappeared from the lineup, creating unexpected opportunities for alternates, sponsor exemptions, and Monday qualifiers hoping to capitalize on one of the PGA Tour’s biggest regular-season events. The sudden exits included notable names such as Aaron Rai, Marco Penge, Michael Kim, Webb Simpson, Trey Mullinax, Aldrich Potgieter, Andrew Putnam, and Nicolai Højgaard.
Penge withdrew while continuing his recovery from a viral infection, while Rai’s exit followed a hectic stretch of media appearances and celebrations after his recent PGA Championship triumph. Their departures added to growing instability around a field that was already missing several of golf’s biggest stars.
The PGA Tour reacted quickly by expanding the field from 145 to 147 players, opening the door for a new group of competitors eager to take advantage of the unexpected vacancies. Among those added were Noah Goodwin, Cameron Champ, Will Gordon, Luke List, Jonathan Byrd, Austin Cook, S.Y. Noh, Scott Piercy, Ryan Palmer, and Mason Howell, who earned his place through a sponsor exemption.
The reshuffle also activated four open qualifying positions, bringing Greg Gregory, Nathan Petronzio, Alex Huang, and Ronin Banerjee into the tournament. For many of those players, the late chaos has suddenly turned into a career-defining opportunity at an event carrying a massive $10.3 million purse.
The changing field only adds to what was already a surprising list of absentees. Major names including Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele, and Brooks Koepka are all skipping the tournament, leaving defending champion Scottie Scheffler as the standout headliner in a significantly altered draw.
