Patrick Reed’s long-running legal battle has officially reached its end after the United States Supreme Court declined to hear his final defamation appeals, closing the door on nearly four years of litigation tied to explosive accusations made against the LIV Golf star.
Reed had filed multiple lawsuits against media companies, journalists and golf personalities after claiming his reputation was damaged by repeated references to cheating allegations and controversial moments throughout his career. The former Masters champion sought massive financial damages, arguing that several reports and televised comments crossed the line from opinion into defamation.
However, court after court ruled against Reed’s claims, with judges repeatedly determining that the statements in question were either protected opinion, lacked evidence of actual malice, or failed to meet the legal standard required for defamation cases involving public figures. Now, with the Supreme Court refusing to take up the appeals, the legal saga has effectively come to a definitive end.
The decision represents a major setback for Reed, who had aggressively pursued the cases while continuing his career on LIV Golf. Supporters of Reed argued he was attempting to defend his name from years of criticism and public scrutiny, while critics viewed the lawsuits as an effort to silence media commentary and discourage negative coverage.
Reed has remained one of the most polarizing figures in professional golf for years. From rules controversies to Ryder Cup drama and his eventual move to LIV Golf, he has consistently found himself at the center of heated debates within the sport. Even so, he has also maintained a loyal fan base that believes he has been unfairly targeted by sections of the golf media and online community.
The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the appeals now leaves Reed with virtually no remaining legal avenues in the case. While the ruling does not directly address whether the criticism against him was fair or unfair, it confirms that the courts will not revisit the earlier decisions that dismissed his claims.
Despite the legal defeat, Reed continues to compete at the highest level and remains one of LIV Golf’s most recognizable names. But with the litigation finally over, attention is likely to shift back fully onto his performances on the course rather than the courtroom battles that followed him for years.
